Villarrica Volcano
From the lacustrine Araucanía region, it is impossible to overlook the classic cone of the Villarrica Volcano; even more so from Pucón, where we find ourselves at its base. Its fidgety fumarole rises vertically or sometimes dances to the right and left, making us contemplate the energy of this majestic volcano. Thousands of adventurers put themselves up to a physical test every year, to experience first-hand one of the most active volcanoes in the world and the most active one in Chile. The incredible panoramic views of the Villarrica, Calafquén, and Caburgua lakes, as well as of the imposing Llaima, Lonquimay, Sierra Nevada, and Lanín Volcano, make the Villarrica Volcano one of the most incredible experiences Pucón has to offer.
Itinerary
Our adventure will begin at 06:00 AM in Pucón. After organizing equipment and reviewing meteorological conditions for one last time, we will ascend in a vehicle to the base of the Villarrica Volcano, which is located approximately 15 km (9 miles) from town.
The first stage of the hike will take us to 1,800 MASL, where we will be able to observe first panoramic views. We will then continue along the north slope, passing the famous “Chapel” (remains of an old ski lift), until the beginning of Villarrica’s glacier at 2,200 MASL. At this point, we will already hit the halfway mark and will be able to observe the cone of the volcano right in front of us.
Crossing part of the glacier through the plateau, we will then begin a zigzag path along the conical slope, with an incline of up to 30°, until reaching the false summit of the volcano, where sometimes you can already smell the fumarole. The last 100 vertical meters along an entertaining path of ice protuberances will lead us to the summit, where we will be able to awe at the large crater of the Villarrica Volcano, whose diameter is no less than 200 meters. This is definitely the magnitude of nature at its finest.
