Located in the eastern part of the Villarrica National Reserve, Sollipulli Volcano awaits us with its prehistoric landscapes. At the entrance, its forest gently leads us to an opening, where it is impossible not to awe at the incredible araucarias (monkey puzzle trees) that stir our imagination. These araucarias witnessed one of the largest volcanic eruptions in history, which raised its column of smoke more than 40 km high and resulted in the Sollipulli’s gigantic crater covered with 12 km2 of glacier.
Our adventure will begin at 05:00 am in Pucón, where we will check equipment and meteorological conditions one last time, before starting the two-hour drive to the town of Melipeuco.
After arriving at the Villarrica National Reserve, accompanied by the first colors of the day, we will prepare for our hike and enter into the depths of the forest. Soon, we will begin to visualize our objective, the summit of Sollipulli Volcano, while approaching its northern slope coated in volcanic rock. The gentle slopes at its base and some more considerable ones, later on, will lead us to the summit, where we will be able to admire an incredible view and the gigantic crater covered with a mesmerizing glacier.
The descent will be along the same route, walking or, if conditions allow, sliding at some sections, using the plastic snow seat sled.
