Right on the border between Chile and Argentina, at the culmination of the canyon located in the southeastern part of Santiago Metropolitan Area, known as Cajón del Maipo, San José Volcano raises at 5,856 MASL (19,213 feet). This iconic peak is one of the “classical summits” of the Central Andes. Our expedition will follow the footsteps of early-day mountaineers who attempted to reach its summit as early as 1831. Along our way, we will stay in the renowned Plantat Refuge constructed in 1937 and will be treated to amazing vistas of the neighboring mountains, immersing ourselves in the sheer grandeur of this natural wonder.

Itinerary

Santiago - El Cabrerio – Plantat Refuge

Our expedition will begin in Santiago, with a departure from your accommodation at 7:30 am. We will head towards San José de Maipo and continue through the expansive valley that leads to El Cabrerio. There we will meet with the muleteer and the mules, who will facilitate the transport of our equipment, signifying the beginning of our hike towards the base camp, situated at 3,100 MASL.

  • Elevation: 2,700-3,100 MASL
  • Lodging: Camp
  • Meals: Box lunch, dinner
  • Approximate duration of activity: 5 hours
Plantat Refuge – Camp 1

We will begin our day at 7:30 am with a hearty breakfast. We will share our feelings about the first night at high altitude, and after organizing our equipment, we will dismantle our base camp and start our hike towards the first high camp at 4,100 MASL. This place will provide us with the opportunity to enjoy awe-inspiring views from the heights.

  • Elevation: 3,100-4,100 MASL
  • Lodging: Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, box lunch, dinner
  • Approximate duration of activity: 5 hours
Camp 1 – Camp 2

At 8:00 am, we will have breakfast and begin the preparations for our summit attempt. Our first step will be dismantling our initial high camp, and then we will make our way up to the second high camp, at an altitude of 5,100 MASL. An early dinner and a focus on proper hydration will help us recover as we visualize the path toward the summit on the following day.

  • Elevation: 4,100-5,100 MASL
  • Lodging: Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, box lunch, dinner
  • Approximate duration of activity: 4 hours
Camp 2 – San José Summit – Plantat Refuge

On the fourth day of our expedition, we will have breakfast at 4:45 am. We will then begin a slow hike, guided by the illumination of our headlamps, towards the summit of San José Volcano, which stands at 5,856 MASL. As we ascend, we will be able to witness the awe-inspiring colors of the sunrise unfolding from the east.

As we approach the crater, we will have the chance to observe the characteristic fumaroles before reaching the summit of San José. We will celebrate with hugs, take photos, enjoy some food, and take a moment to rest before starting our descent back to Refugio Plantat.

The descent will be planned according to the group’s capabilities, and in some cases, it may involve returning to Camp 1 rather than Refugio Plantat.

  • Elevation: 5,100-5,856 MASL
  • Lodging: Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, box lunch, dinner
  • Approximate duration of activity: 10-12 hours
Plantat Refuge – El Cabrerio – Santiago

We will meet for breakfast at 8:00 am and reflect on our previous summit day. Afterward, we will pack up our camp, load our equipment onto the mules, and begin the descent towards El Cabrerio. From there, we will drive back to Santiago, where we will drop you off at your accommodation.

Later in the evening, we will meet up for dinner during which we will relive the moments and experiences of our adventure.
